Not all bulbs are suitable to grow indoors for Christmas flowering.

Hyacinths, large flowered Crocus, some Narcissus and Dwarf Tulips are the best.

Other bulbs can be lifted and forced to flower a little earlier than they would outside. These can be Muscari, Dwarf Iris, Winter Aconite and Snowdrops.

NOW is the time to plan and to plant

To be in flower for Christmas planting must be planned;

  • Hyacinths – Generally plant as soon as available in the garden centre. No later than mid-September for Christmas.
  • Daffodils – Such as Narcissus ‘Paper White’, also planted in September will flower for Christmas.
  • Amaryllis – Plant by October for flowers at Christmas.
